Os Jesúítas no Brasil
Os jesuítas eram padres da Igreja Católica que faziam parte da Companhia de Jesus. Esta ordem religiosa foi fundada em 1534 por Inácio de Loiola. A Companhia de Jesus foi criada logo após a Reforma Protestante (século XVI), como uma forma de barrar o avanço do protestantismo no mundo. Portanto, esta ordem religiosa foi criada no contexto da Contra-Reforma Católica. Os primeiros jesuítas chegaram ao Brasil no ano de 1549, com a expedição de Tomé de Souza.
Objetivos dos jesuítas:
- Levar o catolicismo para as regiões recém descobertas, no século XVI, principalmente à América;
- Catequizar os índios americanos, transmitindo-lhes as línguas portuguesa e espanhola, os costumes europeus e a religião católica;
- Difundir o catolicismo na Índia, China e África, evitando o avanço do protestantismo nestas regiões;
- Construir e desenvolver escolas católicas em diversas regiões do mundo.
Podemos destacar os seguintes jesuítas que vieram ao Brasil no século XVI: Padre Manoel da Nóbrega, Padre José de Anchieta e Padre Antônio Vieira. Em 1760, alegando conspiração contra o reino português, o marquês de Pombal expulsou os jesuítas do Brasil, confiscando os bens da ordem.
